The Professional Development Phase : 17-18 year old
The Phase of Learning to win
The players in the Professional Development Phase U17-U18 (youth team) will be taught to play in exactly the same manner as the 1st team so that there is synergy between the Academy U18s and the Club’s First Team. Although we generally have a set formation, we may change and adapt to the oppositions strengths and weaknesses and the availability of our players through injury or illness. Whatever system the 1st team play, the youth team will play the same system. This should enable the players in this phase to understand the roles and responsibilities of each position and should the players step up to the reserves or first team at any time they will be tactically prepared having played in the same manner in the youth team. During the Professional Development Phase U17-U18, player development and players learning the game is still fundamental to the Academy programme but the attitude that winning games is important is also a trait that we try to instil in to the players.
During the Professional Development Phase players are now also taught the importance of:
• How to win games/winning games is important
• How to learn from winning games
• How to not lose games
• How to learn from losing games
